José Rosado coaching baseball players

Our competency-based “LEP” (Lecto-Escritura y Progreso) Spanish program aligned with local Ministry of Education curricula, was tailor-made for MLB teams to improve Spanish for Latino players, who in general, possess low academic achievement in their native language. Divided into blocks – 4-6th grades, 7-9th grades and High School, LEP aims to improve players’ academic level in their native language. Players are challenged and engaged through hands-on practices (readings, sentence construction, oral group discussions, grammar-oriented exercises, writing, orthography practice, and other activities) related to sports and many other topics that motivate participation. We firmly believe that students learn by doing!

Some topics covered are:
  • Biographies – sports and famous people
  • The News – reading newspapers, sports magazines, articles…
  • Following instructions
  • Public speaking

LEP programs are all supported with online links to help players become life-long learners non dependant on direct instruction. Players are supported through videos, PPT presentations, additional readers, games to increase critical thinking skills and other online material.

“Alpha”- considers students who lack basic literacy skills in their native language. Alpha also considers the use of strategies to increase self-esteem in this population. Material for each program is selected considering academic levels and communicative needs in Spanish.
